This is how it goes.

So basically... My name is Max Wyman and I have decided to take a gap year before college, for many reasons, such as: not being absolutely thrilled with the college I was about to attend, and wanting to explore and experience life. Just that sentence alone makes me happy. I can't think of a better time, personally, to take a gap year because there is a lot I have to learn about myself, and about who I really want to be. Now... about what I am actually doing.

I will be volunteering on organic farms across the country. Wow, right? Yeah pretty out there I guess, but when you actually take a second to think about it, it kinda makes sense. I am always looking for a different route to take, or a way to separate myself because being cliche is not in my bag of tricks. I will be volunteering my hours during the day, farming, and I will be fed and housed by the host farm family that fosters me. My first farm is in Emmitsburg, Maryland and my second is in Vienna, Maine. So... join me on this blog while I try to find myself and also learn the ropes of farming ;).

Day 13

I must've been tired again since I woke up at my alarm, and was not happy.  I could barely open my eyes to go to the bathroom.  I went downstairs, and put some toast in the toaster.  Classic routine.  But, then I forgot that I had used all the jelly yesterday, and ended up just putting butter on my bread.  #notok.  I barely managed to get the cardboard down my throat, with help from my tasteless water.  I went upstairs and got ready, and ended up putting on some damp pants because my laundry load didn't dry properly last night.  I tucked the ends of my pants in my socks so that they wouldn't get drenched by the early morning dew.  I forgot to mention that yesterday I started wearing the boots they had here.  When I first got here I originally couldn't get my feet into them.  Yesterday I could barely get them in, but sacrificed it for wet socks.  Today I did the same.  It is a world of difference.  So I did the rounds, and everything seemed to be in place.  I watered the chickens, and then went straight to the greenhouse to pick spinach.  Apparently we needed 45 POUNDS of spinach.  Yesterday when I picked for 3 hours and filled two buckets, that was maybe equivalent to 4 pounds.  So Zoelli and I picked for awhile, and talked about the family some more.  Nothing new there.  Talked about how shy Josh is, and how it is unhealthy to be cooped up in this house 24/7.  Talked about everyone else while we were at it.  Josh came in later and helped us pick spinach without his shirt on?  Which I thought was strange, because it wasn't that hot, but whatever.  #yougojosh.  After I picked a full bucket, I asked Josh what else I could do, and he said I should go cut wood.  I let him know that I was a little timid because the whole load was about to fall.  He offered to take control of that mission, and sent me to take out the swiss chard plants.  He showed me how to do it properly.  You have to loosen the root with the pitchfork, then grab the root and just yank 'er out.  Thing is these roots are huge.  They are probably the size of a small tree.  I ended up ditching the pitchfork, because it got easier as I picked more, but dang those things are really rooted in there; even when they are dead.  So i spent a good hour and a half tearing out these thick deep roots.  After I muscled the plants out of the soil I loaded them in the cart, and when the cart was full i duped them in the compost pile.  There were a few that took a couple real nice tugs to get out.  You kind of have to not only pull the root but move it around as well, in a circular motion.  I did this until lunch, and jstu as I was about to go in to the house I noticed Josh was about to cut into the wave of wood.  I watched from a distance so that he couldn't see.  I was just waiting for the mountain to fall, and wen it did Josh ran out of the way just in time, to let 7 humungous logs tumble down. I watched from the kitchen window.  Lunch was homemade calzones.  And I have to say, to this date it was the beset meal I have had here.  They were super soft, and just really classic.  We even had a decent conversation at lunch too.  It made up to be a pretty classic meal.  Harold was gone at a Chiropractic Seminar.  I went up to my room after lucy, and did a practice SAT section, and then surfed the web until 130.  I went out and met Josh by the wood, and now I had ample amount of wood to cut.  So, I went to work.  I marked as much wood as I could see, reloaded the chainsaw with fuel and oil, put in my ear plugs, put on the gloves, and did it big.  After I cut I take a short break, on my phone.  Then I go and move all of the logs I just cut, and then I take an even longer break on my phone.  The wood is insanely heavy, and I get super tired after I move them, that the only cool down is sitting on a bench and playing some words with friends.  I worked on wood for 2 and a half hours, until my arms were dead.  It was 415 by then, and I went to go help Zoelli pick some spinach.  We ended up talking more than picking, but we got the container filled.  After we did the chores.  As we were walking down to the chicken coop, I noticed the Turkeys trying to get out of the cage.  It was like a sign.  I mean to be fair, some of the Turkeys are taller than 3 ft, so they are constantly bending their necks.  How uncomfortable.  I still have yet to ask Harold, but I am making it my mission to try and devise a plan for those birds.  The rest of the afternoon was pretty routine.  As is many of the days here.  I asked the eggs, came up to my room and took a small nap.  Woke up and had Stanley Steaks.  They were terribly tough, and almost inedible.  The mashed potatoes were the golden dish of the meal.  After dinner I showered, and then called my pops, and then longed for some dessert so settled for apples and honey again.  I think tomorrow I am going to ask if I can go to the nearest store for some headphones, or something or other because on of my earphones broke.  I need some chocolate/ sweets.  We will see how tomorrow unfolds.  Anyways.  Nighty.
